“Protecting our shared water resources”

The Limpopo River Basin (LRB) remains committed to the sustainable management of its water resources for present and future generations.

LIMCOM Environment and Water Resources Management Specialist, Mr. Zvikomborero Manyangadze made these remarks during his presentation at the session on “Transboundary Water Resources Management,” at the Zimbabwe Water Indaba taking place in Bulawayo.

He said to define and strengthen a shared and sustainable vision for the basin, the four countries that share the basin — Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe — have jointly developed key strategic documents to guide transboundary cooperation.

These strategic documents are the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA), Strategic Action Programme (SAP) and the respective National Action Plans (NAPs).

The TDA identifies key transboundary water-related environmental challenges that adversely affect aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, livelihoods and socio-economic conditions across the basin.

The SAP, on the other hand, is a comprehensive transboundary programme that outlines basin-wide interventions to address the challenges identified through the TDA.

Complementing the SAP, each NAP aligns Member States’ commitments with the regional framework, ensuring implementation at the national level.

The session on “Transboundary Water Resources Management” sought to foster a shared understanding of the status of southern Africa’s transboundary water resources, the governance frameworks in place and the actions required to strengthen ecological integrity, data management, and regional cooperation in the face of climate change.

The Zimbabwe Water Indaba is being held under the theme: “Accelerating Water Security and WASH Delivery: Innovation, Partnership and Resilience for Zimbabwe’s Sustainable Development.”

The African Centre of Excellence for Water in Zimbabwe (ACEWATERZIM), together with the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in collaboration with the and other partners, organized the event held on 23-26 September 2026.
