1st Limpopo Joint Basin Survey

Summary

The Limpopo River Basin (LRB) is a lifeline for millions of people in Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, who use it for various socio-economic activities such as eco-tourism, agro-industry and irrigation. However, have you ever wondered how good or bad the water quality and ecosystem health of the LRB is? The 1st Joint Basin Survey (JBS) for the LRB scheduled to kick off on 6 August 2024 will offer some critical water quality and ecosystem health data and insights into the LRB. Importantly, the survey will also pave the way for the establishment of a transboundary river health monitoring team in the LRB.

Without any doubt – the Limpopo River Basin (LRB) is a lifeline for millions of people in Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, who use it for various socio-economic activities such as eco-tourism, agro-industry and irrigation.

Water quality and ecosystem health data are key to informing policymaking aimed at preserving and enhancing the river basin’s ecological, hydrological, and socioeconomic well-being.

Meeting on 16 July 2024 for their weekly planning session for the 1st Limpopo JBS, the four Riparian States that share the LRB discussed together with the lead JBS consultant, Rivers of Life and LIMCOM, various issues to make sure that the JBS is a success, including the sampling and modalities for the JBS.

The 1st Limpopo JBS is one of the key activities under the project “Integrated Transboundary River Basin Management for the Sustainable Development of the Limpopo River Basin.”

The project, which aims to uplift the living standards of the basin’s population and conserve the basin’s resources and ecosystem services is being implemented by LIMCOM in partnership with the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa GWPSA), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
