Member States capacitated on sediment transport

The training covered both theoretical and practical aspects of sediment monitoring. Practical sessions included various sediment sampling techniques using different equipment, while the theoretical training covered various topics.

The Limpopo River Basin is grappling with the critical issue of sedimentation, which poses significant threats to the river’s ecology, water quality, and downstream communities.

Effective sedimentation management is important to mitigate this challenge, necessitating a collaborative effort among stakeholders to implement sustainable land and water management practices.

To address this issue, LIMCOM convened a capacity-building training session to enhance the capacity of Member States to monitor and address sedimentation in the basin.

The capacity-building training session on the LIMCOM Sediment Monitoring Framework was held on 11-13 March 2025 on the Olifants River in South Africa under the project “Integrated Transboundary River Basin Management for the Sustainable Development of the Limpopo River Basin.”

The training covered both theoretical and practical aspects of sediment monitoring. Practical sessions included various sediment sampling techniques using different equipment, while the theoretical training covered various topics.

LIMCOM Member States said the training was timely as it had created a platform for participants to share experiences and best practices in sediment monitoring.

“The training has created a platform for us know more about what sediment transport is all about;” Tshiamo Motlhetlhi from the Republic of Botswana said, with Phasha from the Republic of South Africa adding that “After this training, we are going to training we are going to train our officials back home.”
