Newly revamped LIMIS now fully operational

Summary

The LIMIS is an interactive, web-based data and information management tool designed to collect, organize, and transform relevant data into actionable knowledge products to provide knowledge-based support to LIMCOM Member States.

The newly revamped Limpopo Management Information System (LIMIS) is now fully operational and poised to enhance decision-making across all levels.

The LIMIS is an interactive, web-based data and information management tool designed to collect, organize, and transform relevant data into actionable knowledge products to provide knowledge-based support to LIMCOM Member States.

Speaking at a LIMIS user training session for Member States held in early July, LIMCOM Environment and Water Resources Management Specialist Mr. Zvikomborero Manyangadze stated that the revamped and now operational system will enable Riparian States to routinely share data and information, fostering basin-wide cooperation.

He noted that data and information for LIMIS will be sourced from a wide range of contributors, including Member States, academic institutions and other research organizations.

“Our aim is to establish LIMIS as the central hub for data and information sharing among LIMCOM Member States,” he said, adding that “a coordinated approach to information exchange is essential, as it informs decision-making in planning processes across the Limpopo Basin, ultimately supporting cooperative human and economic development.”

Manyangadze said the user training session was designed to help Member States familiarize themselves with the new system. The session covered essential skills and knowledge for effective use of LIMIS, including system configuration, user management and access control, as well as reporting and analytics.

The LIMIS was initially developed during the LRB Monograph in 2013. As part of the project Integrated Transboundary River Basin Management for the Sustainable Development of the Limpopo River Basin, LIMCOM reviewed and updated the system to ensure its alignment with new and emerging realities.

LIMCOM is implementing the project in partnership with the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA), with support from the UNDP South Africa, through funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

As part of the review process, the system also explored the potential migration of LIMIS to a new software architecture, while integrating existing basin-wide water resources monitoring systems and environmental monitoring frameworks into the platform.
