Strengthening cross-border information exchange

The LIMCOM Flood Forecasting Task Team convened on 8 June 2026 to strengthen collaboration and share critical updates on flood preparedness across the Limpopo Basin.

The meeting, which was also attended by members of the LIMCOM Sediment Transport Monitoring Task Team, underscored the importance of coordinated response efforts at the basic level to mitigate impacts.

The joint participation of the two task teams is critical as major flood events often accelerate erosion, increasing sediment loads, making it essential to integrate both monitoring and forecasting efforts for a more resilient basin-wide response.

At the meeting, the LIMCOM Secretariat presented an update on the recent post-flood hydrometric assessment, which evaluated the extent of damage to monitoring equipment following the widespread floods of January 2026.

LIMCOM Environment and Water Resources Management Specialist, Mr. Zvikomborero Manyangadze, noted that the floods disrupted several hydrological monitoring networks and highlighted the urgent need to repair and replace damaged equipment to ensure reliable data collection for future flood forecasting.
