Taking stock and planning for the year

Summary

Speaking at the planning meeting, Programme Coordinator, Dr. Eddie Riddell said 2024 had seen the project register several milestones and there is a need to maintain the same momentum in 2025 to ensure continued success of the project.

The Project Management Unit (PMU) for the “Integrated Transboundary River Basin Management for the Sustainable Development of the Limpopo River Basin,” project met on 24-26 February in Pretoria, South Africa to review and plan activities for the year.

LIMCOM is implementing the project in partnership with the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA), with support from the United Nations Development Programme, (UNDP), through funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Speaking at the planning meeting, Programme Coordinator, Dr. Eddie Riddell said 2024 had seen the project register several milestones and there is a need to maintain the same momentum in 2025 to ensure continued success of the project.

Some of the milestones achieved in 2024 include the official launch of the project by the four LIMCOM Member States as well as the commencement of the 1st Limpopo Joint Basin Survey (JBS).

Dr. Riddell said several interventions are lined up for the year and closer collaboration among the PMU will once again be key in ensuring the smooth implementation of these activities.

These activities include:

  • Approval of the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) Report
  • Finalization of the 1st Limpopo JBS
  • Commencement of the Sediment Transport Research for the basin
  • Strengthening Flood Forecasting
  • Validation of the Limpopo Groundwater Strategy
  • Establishment of an Environmental/Water Resources Task Team
  • Implementation of Sustainable Land Management

The project “Integrated Transboundary River Basin Management for the Sustainable Development of the Limpopo River Basin,” seeks to achieve integrated, cross-sectoral, ecosystem-based management of the Limpopo River to uplift the living standards of the basin’s population and conserve the basin’s resources and ecosystem services. The project contributes to Objective 3 of the GEF International Waters (IW) Focal Area Strategy, which is to “enhance water security in shared freshwater ecosystem.”
