8th International REMCO Conference
Summary
At the conference, LIMCOM shared its insights and experiences with fellow River Basin Organizations (RBOs) and Shared Watercourse Institutions (SWIs) on best practices in transboundary water management.
The 8th International REMCO Conference was held in Maputo, Mozambique in November, bringing together key stakeholders to advance river and environmental management cooperation across borders.
The REMCO initiative is a collaboration between water management institutions in the Kingdom of Eswatini, Mozambique and South Africa, focused on the shared stewardship of the Incomati and Usuthu River Basins.
Held on 4-7 November 2025, the conference explored how cross-border collaboration and cutting-edge technologies can strengthen the management of shared water resources amid mounting environmental challenges.
At the conference, LIMCOM shared its insights and experiences with fellow River Basin Organizations (RBOs) and Shared Watercourse Institutions (SWIs) on best practices in transboundary water management.
Led by the Executive Secretary Mr. Sergio Sitoe and Senior Technical Advisor Dr. Eben Chonguica, LIMCOM showcased its pioneering work on the Digital Twin (DT), Citizen Science programme and the Limpopo Joint Basin Survey (JBS).
Developed in partnership with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), under the CGIAR Initiative on Digital Innovation, the DT is a dynamic virtual replica of the basin’s water systems, designed to support smarter, faster and more collaborative decision-making across borders.
The Limpopo Basin Citizen Science initiative, also implemented in collaboration with IWMI, is a groundbreaking effort to involve local communities in monitoring and managing water resources across the Limpopo River Basin (LRB). It blends grassroots knowledge with scientific tools to support inclusive, data-driven water governance.
Meanwhile, the Limpopo Joint Basin Survey (JBS), conducted last year, assessed the ecological health of the LRB. The survey formed part of the “Integrated Transboundary River Basin Management for the Sustainable Development of the Limpopo River Basin” project, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The theme for the 8th International REMCO Conference was “Enhancing Resilience and Water Governance in Transboundary River Basin.”
